CULTURE IN RUSSIA

Russian culture is a significant part of the Russian intangible heritage.

Over its long history, Russia has absorbed the culture of not only many peoples on its territory, but also the culture of European and Asian Сountries.

The names of Russian cultural figures are known all over the world: Pushkin, Tolstoy, Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Repin, Malevich and many others.

The works of the Russian writers have been translated into many languages, Russian ballet performances have been successfully staged in various theaters around the world, the musical works of the Russian composers have become world classics, and the paintings of the Russian artists can often be found in world museums and galleries, as well as in private collections.

The Russian language is an essential part of Russian culture. The letters used in the Russian language were invented by the Byzantine Greeks Cyril and Methodius in the IX century. Due to the written language, Russian tribes were able to perpetuate ancient legends, what laid the foundation for communication with the next generations. The modern Russian written language consists of letters based on the Cyrillic alphabet. There are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet.

In the mid-XIX century, folklore attracted the attention of the Russian Intelligentsia. The great Russian writer and ethnographer Vladimir Dal collected rare and dialect words throughout Russia and in 1863 his «Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language» was published, which included about 200 thousand words. The dictionary of V.I. Dal is a symbol of the richness of the Russian language.

It is in the culture where the peculiarities of the Russian temper and mentality are reflected. Thousands of years of development of Russian culture were based on morality, respect for the memory of our ancestors, and love for the world around us.
